Community tip - Cabo Verde
The Jewish Cemetery of Ponta do Sol
About the place
A remnant of a small Jewish community that developed in the islands mainly in the 19th century. Many of the Jews arrived in Cape Verde from Morocco and Gibraltar and engaged in commerce. In the cemetery, you can see gravestones with Jewish names and inscriptions in Hebrew and Portuguese. In recent years, preservation and restoration work has been carried out as part of the Cape Verde Jewish Heritage Project. Not far from here, there is a town named Sinagoga. The locals told us that the town is named after a synagogue that was in the area.
