Länder > Guinea
Guinea does not reveal itself on easy mode—you earn the road, and that is exactly why it stays with you. Conakry is squeezed between the Atlantic and mangroves, packed with markets, music and motion; just offshore, the Îles de Los offer sand, palms and a welcome breath after the capital’s full-volume energy.
The heart of a backpacking route is the Fouta Djallon, a green highland of cliffs, valleys, waterfalls and walking trails where several major West African rivers rise. Dalaba and Mamou make useful bases for local-guided hikes, village stays and the slow discovery that the path between waterfalls can be better than the checklist. Farther southeast, Mount Nimba protects a remarkable and ecologically sensitive landscape shared across borders.
Guinea is not about polished comfort or precise timetables. It is about big nature, genuine adventure and encounters that refuse to be scheduled. Bring some French, build generous margins into the route, ask before photographing people and explore rural areas with guides who know both the trails and the communities around them.
